Vasil Barnov (Barnaveli)
Writer, Teacher, and Public Figure - One of the founders of the Georgian historical novel, Vasil Barnov (Barnaveli) was born in 1856 in the village of Koda in what today is known as Tetritskaro district. At the end of the 1880s, he was elected as a member of the Society for Spreading Literacy among Georgians. Later, in 1918-1921, he worked as a teacher at the Tbilisi cadet school . In 1921-1930, he taught Georgian language and literature at Tbilisi University . Barnov contributed substantially to Georgian folklore. In the Tbilisi theological seminary , he taught a course on Georgian folk rhetoric. Meanwhile, he was actively involved in the struggle to restore the autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church (gained in 1917). Vasil Barnov died in 1934. He is buried at the Mtatsminda Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures in Tbilisi.
