"The Mother of Georgian Singing," Choir Leader, and Public Artist - Maro Tarkhnishvili was born on 21 December 1891 in the village of Kavtiskhevi, in Kaspi district. At the age of 12-13 years, Tarkhnishvili created a small team called "Maro's Lkhini" with her fellow villagers.
In 1910, Tarkhnishvili performed for the first time in front of the citizens of Gori and enchanted them with her songs "Urmuli," "Daigvianes,” and "Chona" among others. In 1921, she was invited to the conservatory by Zakaria Paliashvili and Dimitri Arakishvili. During the Second World War, she performed about 400 free concerts and up until 1949, she led the State Ensemble of Kartli-Kakhetian Songs. In 1910, together with her sister Ekaterine, she founded the choir of Kartli-Kakhetian songs in Gori. She died on 3 October 1969, and is buried in the Didube Pantheon in Tbilisi.
